Bedford Alumni will be bring a live audio broadcast of all Bedford Varsity Football games this fall.
Bedford Alumni Rob Watson ('01), Dan Roth ('02), & Dustin Cress ('01) will be partnering with Larry Mauter and BedfordSports.com to bring a live audio broadcast of all Bedford Varsity Football games this fall to the Bedford Township community and beyond. This will be the eighth full season that the team will broadcast the full slate of Bedford games and the 16th consecutive season the team has in some way brought Mule football to the airwaves. The Executive Producer for the broadcasts will be another Bedford alumnus, Joe Coutcher ('02).
The team previously worked with the school's broadcasting department on TV and FM radio before broadcasting independently as FFR Media for the past two seasons. The team has previously been broadcast on bedfordsports.com having developed a strong following with a maximum number of hits topping 3,000 listeners for several games in the past. The partnership between the team of Alumni and bedfordsports.com mark a unique partnership of broadcast-quality productions of each Varsity contest as well as a professional sports information website which provide a level of quality information that most public schools in this area do not have.
Each week's broadcast will feature a 10-15 minute interview during the Pre game segment with Bedford Head Coach Jeff Wood and other features throughout the season to highlight events and activities going on at Bedford High School. Broadcasts may be streamed live online beginning at 6:30 pm each Friday night by visiting www.bedfordsports.com.
BedfordSports.com has a limited amount of advertising space left available for these football broadcasts. For more information, please contact Larry Mauter at info@bedfordsports.com
The broadcast crew strongly support the Bedford High School Alumni Association and Bedford Football Parents Club and urge their listeners to support those organizations throughout the season. For more information or questions about the broadcasts, please contact Dustin Cress at cress112@live.com.

Alumni Association Special Announcement
Attention All BHS Alumni and Bedford Supporters!
There will be an informational meeting for persons interested in joining the Bedford High School Alumni Association. The meeting will take place on Wednesday, August 5 th 2015 at 7:00PM in Study Room C at the Bedford Branch Library. This meeting will be held to discuss the history and future of the Association, and to answer any questions about the organization that anyone may have. The Alumni Association is open to all BHS Alumni and anyone who has an interest in promoting Bedford High School (Attending or graduating from BHS is not a requirement to join the Alumni Association).
The 50 th Anniversary Celebration of the current BHS building on Jackman and Dean Roads which is scheduled for September 25 th & 26 th has sparked renewed interest by many BHS Alumni in joining the BHS Alumni Association. Congratulations to the planning committee for doing a great job of organizing this event. You have our total support! We all are looking forward to attending the 2-day event and helping out in any way that we can. Click here for information concerning the 50th Anniversary Celebration.
Over the past 19 years many dedicated people have worked hard in leadership roles to keep the BHS Alumni Association an outstanding community organization. Since the Alumni Association was established back in January of 1996, the hope has been that more alumni would get involved in leadership roles, but that has not happened. Currently, thanks to the generosity of Grogan’s Towne and Barron Insurance for assuming paying off the Bedford Community Stadium loan, there is no outstanding debt for the Alumni Association to worry about for phase 1 of the Bedford Community Stadium project.
Currently there is an account set up for donations to construct permanent restrooms at the Bedford Community Stadium. Barron Insurance is currently donating $4,000 per year to this fund. Click here for more information concerning the Bedford Community Stadium project phases.
The BHS Alumni Association was formed:
1. To encourage camaraderie between Bedford graduates and others who are interested in the well-being of Bedford High School.
2. To provide assistance for current students.
3. To keep members informed about what is happening at Bedford High School and with other members.
4. To undertake special school related projects.
5. Sponsor the Bedford High School Hall of Fame. The purpose of the BHS Alumni Association Hall of Fame is to recognize outstanding achievements (i.e. way above and beyond the norm) of primarily Bedford High School alumni (students, athletes, post graduate successful alumni, teams and organizations) and secondarily staff (teachers, coaches, administrators and other staff members) and other supporters.” Click here for additional information concerning the BHS Alumni Association Hall of Fame.
The Alumni Association is trying to get an idea of how many people will attend the meeting on August 5th. If you plan on attending the meeting, please contact Chuck Faller, Alumni Association President at the contact info listed below.
If you cannot attend the meeting but would like to join the Alumni Association, just click here for a printable copy of the application and mail it in to the Alumni Association.

Questions and Answers Concerning the Bedford High Alumni Association and the Bedford Community Stadium Project
Listed below are recent questions and answers concerning the Bedford High School Alumni Association and the Bedford Community Stadium Project.
Questions concerning the Alumni Association should be directed to Alumni Association President, Chuck Faller. Questions concerning the Bedford Community
Stadium Project should be directed to Bedford Community Stadium Committee Co-Chairman Gene Stock
1. What was the Bedford Community Stadium Project? Who started it?
The Bedford Community Stadium Project was the first special project of the Bedford High School Alumni Association. Click here to read the history of the Bedford Community Stadium Committee.
2. How was the Bedford Community Stadium Project financed?
3. Who is paying the off the loan of $1 million debt for the construction of the Bedford Community Stadium?
The debt was being paid by the Bedford High School Alumni Association through donations and fund raisers until 2011. Annual payments were made each year to Monroe Bank and Trust who financed the loan. Click here to view the history concerning the loan from 1997 to 2011. The ordinal agreement with MB&T signed in July 1997 called for payments of $100,000 per year for 5 years with the balance due at maturity at an interest rate of 5.35 %. Over the years, MB&T has renegotiated the original agreement with the Alumni Association and Bedford Public Schools to extend the agreement, lower the interest rate and lower the amount of the annual payments. Click here to view the original loan agreement along with the revised payment schedule. See question #4 below to read about who is currently paying the debt on the loan.
4. What is the current status of the debt owed on the Bedford Community Stadium?
In June of 2011, Grogan’s Towne car dealership in Toledo agreed to pay on the stadium debt. They negotiated a contract with Bedford Public Schools and the BHS Alumni Association to make payments of $24,000 per year for 12 years in exchange for naming rights to the stadium field and other advertising on the Bedford Public Schools property. Click here to view the media coverage of the agreement which gives the details.
In February of 2012 Barron Insurance located in Temperance Michigan agreed to also pay on the stadium debt. They negotiated a contract with Bedford Public Schools and the BHS Alumni Association to make payments of $10,000 per year to the Alumni Association, $6,000 would go toward the stadium debt and $4,000 would be set aside to start a fund to build permanent restroom facilities at the stadium. In exchange for their payment each year Baron Insurance would receive advertising at the stadium. Click here to view the media coverage concerning the agreement with Barron Insurance.
5. What is the current status of the Bedford High School Alumni Association?
The Alumni Association has not been as active for the past couple of years as it was from 1996-2013. Yes, there still is a Bedford High School Alumni Association, but it consists of basically 4 people who have pretty much done everything for the past 2 years. Many people have put in a great deal of time for the association in the past, but our lives are all at a point that we simply do not have that kind of time to commit anymore. The last major event sponsored by the Alumni Association was the Hall of Fame banquet in October of 2013.
Over the past 19 years many dedicated people have worked hard in leadership roles to keep the BHS Alumni Association an outstanding community organization. Since the Alumni Association was established back in January of 1996, the hope has been that more alumni would get involved in leadership roles, but that has not happened. With the 50 th Anniversary of the current BHS building celebration going on in September this may be a good time for BHS alumni to get involved with the Alumni Association. It would be nice to see some people who would like to run for officers and take an active role in revitalizing the Alumni Association. Currently, thanks to the generosity of Grogan’s Towne and Barron Insurance for assuming paying off the Bedford Community Stadium loan, there is no outstanding debt for the Alumni Association to concentrate their fund-raising efforts. Their efforts now can be spent on why the Association was formed:
1. To encourage camaraderie between Bedford graduates and others who are interested in the well-being of Bedford High School.
2. To provide assistance for current students.
3. To keep members informed about what is happening at Bedford High School and with other members.
4. To undertake special school related projects.
Click here to view complete information concerning the Alumni Association, including the history and constitution of the Association.
6. Is the BHS Alumni Association a 501c3 organization? (A 501c3 organization is a United States nonprofit organization that has been approved by the Internal Revenue Service to be tax-exempt under the terms of section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code) What is the current status of the of 501c3?
Yes, the BHS Alumni Association is a certified 501c3 Organization with all donations made to the organization being tax deductible. According to the BHS Alumni Association Treasurer, Laura Collins, the current status is up-to-date (July 2015). All filing requirements have be met each year with Federal Government and the State of Michigan. Click here to view the current 501c3 information concerning the Bedford High School Alumni Association. Please contact BHS Alumni Association Treasurer Laura Collins if you have any questions concerning the the status of the 501c3.
7. Is the Alumni Association still accepting donations toward the stadium project, Alumni Association scholarships, Hall of Fame and other general donations to the Association?
Yes, the Alumni Association is still accepting donations. Click here to view the various methods of donating.
8. Is the Alumni Association participating in the 50th Anniversary Celebration on September 25 & 26, 2015
Yes, a current officer of the Alumni Association is serving on the planning committee and other members are planning on attending future meetings to offer their assistance with the event. The Alumni Association has supported this event since the event was announced. Another member of the Association has been posting information on the Bedford Yes Web site in cooperation with the committee chairman, Evelyn Powers since May 2015 to publicize the event. On June 27, 2015 it was suggested to committee Chairman Evelyn Powers, by an Alumni Association member: “It would be a great idea to have a couple of the current Alumni Association officers attend the next 50th Anniversary Celebration meeting. It would be nice to see some new Alumni get involved with the BHS Alumni Association. It also would be to the committee's advantage to be able to use the Alumni Association's current 501c3 status if the group needs to purchase anything for the celebration without having to pay any sales tax.” The Committee Chairman, Evelyn Powers responded “I do want to use the Alumni Association's 501(c)(3) for this Event”.

Clayton Kelley, the man who started Bedford High School’s ultra-successful Wrestling program has passed away.
Former Bedford High School Teacher and Coach, Clayton Kelley, has passed away at the age of 81 on Wednesday, September 24, 2014.
He was inducted into the Bedford High School Alumni Association Hall of Fame in 2011. Here is the narrative from the Hall of Fame Program: “Clayton Kelley was a Teacher, Mentor, and Coach while at Bedford High School, but he is most notably remembered here for being the man who started the Wrestling Program at Bedford High School in 1958. Starting with very little experience he made Bedford a winning program in just two years, and a winning wrestling program has been an ongoing tradition at Bedford for about as long as anyone can remember. He produced 9 conference champions, 9 state qualifiers and one state placer. He attended BGSU, Eastern Michigan, and served in the Marine Corps. After leaving Bedford he taught and coached for another 20 years at Garden City High School in Garden City Michigan.” May he rest in peace!

I would like to share the public address announcement made at the Whitmer vs. St. John game last Friday night regarding Bedford's recent tragedy. "Ladies and gentlemen, we ask that you direct your attention to the field and join the St. John's Jesuit Titans, the Whitmer Panthers, the people of Bedford Township, and the Durbin family in a moment of silence to mourn the loss and remember the life of #3 Colton Durbin, a son, a brother, a friend, a senior student and athlete at Bedford High School who passed away Thursday afternoon. While these two teams compete tonight, we all stand with the family of Colton Durbin and the students of Bedford High School during this time of grieve and pain, and express our support for their healing and recovery in the days ahead." It was a beautiful tribute and I asked teacher/PA announcer Matt Kizaur if I could share it with the Bedford Family on Facebook, and he gladly provided it. Thank you Mr. Kizaur for authoring these kind words and sharing.

Alumni Association receives generous donation from Doolittle’s
Arnie and Brad Jennings, owners of AJ’s Doolittle’s in Lambertville recently presented Chuck Faller, president, and Laura Collins, treasurer, of the Bedford Alumni Association a check for $500. Doolittle’s held a fundraising event on November 18 where they offered customers some outstanding specials and then donated a percentage of their profits to the Alumni Association. “They also had some 50/50 drawings on different nights,” Collins said. Money donated to the Alumni Association from the fundraiser will be used to help Alumni Association receives generous donation from Doolittle’s pay down the debt owed on the Bedford Community Stadium.
According to Collins, over the years their $1 million dollar loan has been reduced to $280,000. No tax dollars were used to fund the construction of the stadium. “Arnie and Brad Jennings reached out to help the Alumni Association,” Faller said. They contacted me through a friend and told me that they would really like to help us get the stadium paid for. We put our heads together on the fundraiser and it was a win/win for both the Association and for Doolittle’s.” “The Alumni Association is very grateful to Arnie and Brad for helping in our endeavor to pay the football stadium off,” Collins said.
Faller said, “Most people and businesses have been great about working with us when we ask, but this is the first time that someone approached us and said, ‘how can we help.’ ” He added, “When everyone works together great things can happen and I am really grateful to Doolittle’s for their willingness to get on board with the Alumni Association.”
Be sure to watch for future Alumni Association advertising. Faller said that another fundraiser/ party is planned for mid to late February and for those who participate it will be a great time and awesome value!

Congratulations to the Bedford High School Football Team!
SEC Red Division Champs and MHSAA State playoff qualifier. Keep It Going Mules!!!
We need your help! As many of you know, the Bedford High School Alumni Association is still paying on the note for the Bedford Community Stadium, which is the home field for the Bedford Mules football team. The current balance is $280,000 on the one million dollar loan. We are proud of our community and its reputation and that’s why in 1997 we decided to make the stadium our first special project that is now benefiting everyone who lives here. Please become part of one of the largest privately funded projects in the State of Michigan. Here is how you can “Be A Part Of It”:
1. “Community Rewards Card Program”. Marge and Norb Abel, owners of the Schoolhouse Lunchroom, have offered us an opportunity to raise some funds to help pay off the stadium loan. It is a new program called “Community Rewards Program”. Every time a person uses one of the special “rewards” cards that we issue at the Schoolhouse Lunchroom the Bedford High School Alumni Association will receive a percentage of the purchase. There is no cost for the card.
Another nice feature of this program is that you can "lend" your card to family and friends to use. Even though the card is activated in your name, other people can borrow your card and use it when they pay for their meal at the Schoolhouse Lunchroom. The more the card is used, the more the Alumni Association will benefit. Remember, every time the card is used with a payment, 10% of the bill will go to the Alumni Association to help pay off the stadium loan. Even if you do not live in the area you can still help by passing on this information to your family and friends that live in the Lambertville area. Please contact us if you would like a card.
The Schoolhouse Lunchroom is open M-F 8:00-5:30 & Saturday 8:00-3:00. They also offer take out orders. Here is their web site that lists daily menu specials: www.oldeschoolhousecommons.com Their complete menu is listed on the following web page: http://www.bedfordyes.com/BHSAlumniAssocAnnounceCurrentNews.htm
2. Purchase a custom engraved brick with your personal message. These bricks will pave a pathway of pride throughout the Community Stadium and will be a lasting reminder of the contributors. The bricks make a wonderful gift or memorial. The cost to purchase a brick is $100 for a 4”x 8” or $200 for an 8”x 8” brick. Click here to download a buy a brick form.
3. “Make A Pledge” to the Bedford Community Stadium over 5 years. Your name will be included on a plaque on the “Recognition Wall of Fame” (located at the east end of the stadium) with a pledge of $1,000 ($200 per year) or more. Click here to download a pledge form.
4. Attend one of our “Charity Poker Events”. We have scheduled 4 event dates with the new Players Poker Room in the Bedford Plaza (next to Mancino’s Pizza & Grinders) at 7200 Lewis Avenue, Temperance, Michigan. The charity poker events start at 2:00 p.m. and end at 2:00 a.m. each day. We are also looking for people to help work at the events. If you can spare a few hours of your time on any of the Charity Poker dates, please contact us. Click here for a printable flyer.

School Bus Safety Mirror:
Click here to view a video of the dedication of the historical marker at Ole Schoolhouse Commons to honor Reid Stout, a Bedford educator who invented the school bus safety mirror.
Click here to view additional information concerting Reid Stout.
It's an innovation that is credited with keeping millions of children safe everyday. In 1948 in Center Line, Michigan, a little girl was crushed by a school bus. The terrible accident was fresh in the mind of educator Reid Stout as he drove his school bus to drop off students from Bedford Rural Agricultural School.
A little girl named Susan Hetzel got out of the bus and dropped her books in front of the front wheel. Stout couldn't see Susan Hetzel but remembered the death in Center Line. So, he put the emergency brake on the bus and got out and looked and there was little Suzy Hetzel standing there, picking up her books and things. It haunted Reid Stout that he could have run over a student. The story goes he couldn't sleep for days and days.
After some trial and error, Stout came up with the idea to mount an arm and a convex mirror to the bus. What he invented gave a bus driver eyes where he never had them before. It was an innovation and Bedford school busses became the first to use mirrors. Soon districts across Michigan, Ohio and the country clammered to add the mirrors to their busses.
Stout served the district as educator but he served the country through his invention of the convex safety mirror. Stout died in 1986 but two former students are set to honor stout with the first Bedford history monument. It's because of Jerry Kish and Norbert Able that Stout's story will be remembered. They think every mom who greets her child after school owes a thank you to Reid Stout and the safety mirror he pioneered. It also should be noted that the historical marker itself was made possible because of a generous donation by local Bedford Township community members Paul and Patricia Swy (Founders of MTS Seating) Click here to read more about Paul Swy.
