Here are the Bios for the Hall of Fame inductees:
Jesse Elzinga Class of 1997
Jesse was a Cross Country and Track Star while at Bedford High School. Jesse posted 2 of the top 10 times in BHS Cross Country history, and held the overall school record until last year. He earned All Conference, All Region, and All State honors in both Cross Country and Track, and placed 3 rd in the 3200-meter in 1996. Jesse was named track athlete of the year in both cross country and track by the Monroe Evening News. He was academic -All-State in '96. Sadly a serious injury wiped out his entire senior seasons in track and CC. His coaches felt that if was not injured he well might have been a state champ in '97. Jesse is now a teacher and administrator at St. Edwards School in Oxford U.K.
Clayton Kelley
Clayton was a Teacher, Mentor, and Coach while at Bedford High School, but he is most notably remembered here for being the man who started the Wrestling Program at Bedford High School in 1958. Starting with very little experience he made Bedford a winning program in just two years, and a winning wrestling program has been an ongoing tradition at Bedford for about as long as anyone can remember. He produced 9 conference champions, 9 state qualifiers and one state placer. He attended BGSU, Eastern Michigan, and served in the Marine Corps. After leaving Bedford he taught and coached for another 20 years at Garden City High School in Garden City Michigan.
Rebecca (Neorr) Umpstead Class of 1990
Rebecca was an outstanding athlete during her career at Bedford High School, in addition to being a good student and a great person. She played on the Track, Basketball and Softball teams but her 4-year career sport was Volleyball. While earning honors at the other sports, Rebecca was Class A All District and All Region in Volleyball both her Junior and Senior years. She set team records for service aces and block solos in a match, and was named 2 nd team All State her senior year. Rebecca is married, has 3 children, and is a recreation specialist with the Ann Arbor Recreation Department.
Terri (Riddle) Ornsby Class of 1988
Terri was a gifted multi-sport athlete while a Bedford High School, excelling at softball and basketball. Terri set many individual records and won many individual awards during her career at Bedford including the Golden Glove Award, set the stolen base record, most hits in a single season, and posted the highest batting average. She was named to the first team All District, All Region, and Second team All State during her career. During her senior year she had the misfortune of a career ending knee injury that ended any further opportunities. Terri is married, has 4 children and resides in the Bedford Area.
Paul Stanifer
Paul is a retired music teacher from Bedford High School, and his legacy has been an inspiration for his successors to follow. At the time Bedford had a Symphony, Marching Band, Concert Band, Stage Band, and Paul was involved in them all. He took our programs to first place finishes in state competitions on numerous occasions, and after retirement continued to server in the music community as a respected judge for the Michigan State Band and Orchestra Assn. Paul and his wife reside in Manitou Beach Michigan.
Louis Tibai Class of 1992
Louis was a wrestler at Bedford High School and a very successful one. He was a two-time team state champion (89’ and 92’), was the 130 pound individual state champion in 1992, and had a career record of 178-12-1. He was a state finalist his other two years of high school in 1990 and 1991. A three time league champion, three time district champion, and three time regional champion all go toward his impressive resume’. Louis and his wife Heidi have 4 children and reside in Bedford Township.
1998 State Championship Volleyball Team
This year’s team selection to the Hall of Fame is our first state championship volleyball team. The 1998 team consisted of Lindi Bankowski, Brook Burton, Theresa Estes, Katy Grodi, Bree Hickman, Melissa Lyczkowski, Val Lyczkowski, current Hall of Fame member Shayna Munson, Sarah Oleszczuk, Rachael Parsons, Sarah Schneider, and Melissa Weaver. In addition the following girls were brought up from the JV team to participate in tournaments that year; Melissa Meinhart, Nicole Salisbury and Tara Paranick. This team had an 89-3 record, set records for most wins in a season, longest winning streak (46), and won 11 of 12 tournaments that year. This team’s head coach was Jodi Manore who still serves in that capacity at Bedford High School today.

Newspaper articles concerning Bedford Baseball All-Region & All-State Honors:
Bedford’s Jared Kujawa, a standout in football, hockey and baseball, has been named Monroe County Region Boys Athlete of the Year.
2011 Monroe County Region Boys Atahlete of the Year
Born to be a leader - Jared Kujawa a rare mix of talent, humility
By Ron Montri: Monroe Evening News, July 3, 2011
Bedford football coach Jeff Wood has a framed picture in his office that was taken during the 2009 season. Quarterback Jared Kujawa is the main focus of the picture. “It was taken during his junior year. We were tied with Ann Arbor Pioneer 21-21 and were driving (for the go-ahead TD). The players are kneeling and Jared is standing over the huddle. You can see the look on his face that says we’re going to win this game,’’ Wood said.
That natural leadership ability, coupled with his immense talent, sets Kujawa apart from most athletes. He lettered in football, hockey and baseball as a senior and had exceptional seasons in all three. Kujawa has been chosen as the Region Boys Athlete of the Year by The Evening News sports staff in a close vote over Daniel Bolster of Dundee .
“He’s one of those special kids who comes along every 10 or 15 years and yet he’s so humble with that outstanding ability,’’ Wood said. Kujawa is ready to move on to the next phase of his athletic career, playing baseball at Western Michigan University.
His football and hockey days are over. At least it looks that way. “It wouldn’t surprise me if I ran into him down the road and he told me he was playing two sports in college,’’ said Bedford hockey coach Randy Menchaca. “He’s that kind of an athlete.’’
Kujawa led the football team to the best season in school history (11-1) by running and passing for 2,178 yards and 35 touchdowns. He took off his football pads, donned hockey pads and had 39 goals and 33 assists in 25 games. He removed his hockey pads, put on his catching gear and hit .519 for the 36-7 baseball team. Kujawa’s athletic feats are legendary.
In one football game, he ran for seven touchdowns and passed for another. He carried the ball 15 times for 326 yards, a 21.7 average. His night would have been even better if a 36-yard TD run hadn’t been called back by a penalty.
He was a three-year starter in baseball and Bedford had a 107-15 record during that span. Kujawa either scored or drove in 287 runs during his career.
He scored seven goals in a 24-hour span for the hockey team, getting a hat trick the first night and tallying all of Bedford’s goals in a 4-3 win the following night. “His ability as an athlete and leader were far above any player I’ve coached,’’ Menchaca said. “The kids followed what he did on the ice and what he was doing off the ice. He has great skills and a great sense of humor.’’ Kujawa earned four letters in hockey. He missed a month of his junior season when he decided to have knee surgery so he would be ready for baseball. “I knew he would be back (to the hockey team) sooner than they expected and he was. That’s the kind of kid he is,’’ Menchaca said.
Kujawa is the son of Gary and Chris Kujawa and played part of his hockey career with Garryt, his older brother. Garryt will join the Bedford hockey coaching staff next season as an assistant coach.
In football, Kujawa had a knack for hunkering behind the line until a hole opened, then dashing for long yardage. He set a school record with 1,564 rushing yards as a senior and crossed the goal line 27 times. Kujawa wasn’t called upon to pass very often but completed 31-of-53 for 614 yards and 8 TDs. It was no coincidence that Bedford’s football program took off in 2009 when he became the starting quarterback. Bedford beat Pioneer for the first time in school history on the night

SEC Red Division Champs and MHSAA State playoff qualifier. Keep It Going Mules!!!
We need your help! As many of you know, the Bedford High School Alumni Association is still paying on the note for the Bedford Community Stadium, which is the home field for the Bedford Mules football team. The current balance is $280,000 on the one million dollar loan. We are proud of our community and its reputation and that’s why in 1997 we decided to make the stadium our first special project that is now benefiting everyone who lives here. Please become part of one of the largest privately funded projects in the State of Michigan. Here is how you can “Be A Part Of It”:
1. “Community Rewards Card Program”. Marge and Norb Abel, owners of the Schoolhouse Lunchroom, have offered us an opportunity to raise some funds to help pay off the stadium loan. It is a new program called “Community Rewards Program”. Every time a person uses one of the special “rewards” cards that we issue at the Schoolhouse Lunchroom the Bedford High School Alumni Association will receive a percentage of the purchase. There is no cost for the card.
Another nice feature of this program is that you can "lend" your card to family and friends to use. Even though the card is activated in your name, other people can borrow your card and use it when they pay for their meal at the Schoolhouse Lunchroom. The more the card is used, the more the Alumni Association will benefit. Remember, every time the card is used with a payment, 10% of the bill will go to the Alumni Association to help pay off the stadium loan. Even if you do not live in the area you can still help by passing on this information to your family and friends that live in the Lambertville area. Please contact us if you would like a card.
The Schoolhouse Lunchroom is open M-F 8:00-5:30 & Saturday 8:00-3:00. They also offer take out orders. Here is their web site that lists daily menu specials: www.oldeschoolhousecommons.com Their complete menu is listed on the following web page: http://www.bedfordyes.com/BHSAlumniAssocAnnounceCurrentNews.htm
2. Purchase a custom engraved brick with your personal message. These bricks will pave a pathway of pride throughout the Community Stadium and will be a lasting reminder of the contributors. The bricks make a wonderful gift or memorial. The cost to purchase a brick is $100 for a 4”x 8” or $200 for an 8”x 8” brick. Click here to download a buy a brick form.
3. “Make A Pledge” to the Bedford Community Stadium over 5 years. Your name will be included on a plaque on the “Recognition Wall of Fame” (located at the east end of the stadium) with a pledge of $1,000 ($200 per year) or more. Click here to download a pledge form.
4. Attend one of our “Charity Poker Events”. We have scheduled 4 event dates with the new Players Poker Room in the Bedford Plaza (next to Mancino’s Pizza & Grinders) at 7200 Lewis Avenue, Temperance, Michigan. The charity poker events start at 2:00 p.m. and end at 2:00 a.m. each day. We are also looking for people to help work at the events. If you can spare a few hours of your time on any of the Charity Poker dates, please contact us. Click here for a printable flyer.
The dates are:
November 6,7,8, 9
November 18,19,20,21
December 9,10,11,12
December 17,18,19,20
5. Become an active member of the Bedford High School Alumni Association. We are a group of BHS graduates and others who are interested in the well being of Bedford High School. We meet the fourth Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at Bedford High School in Room B-6. No membership fee is required and membership is open to everyone whether you are a Bedford graduate or not. Click here to download a membership form.
6. Volunteer to help with any of our fundraising activities.
If you would like more information on how you can “Be A Part of It” please contact us.

Bill currently lives in Adrian, Michigan with his wife Mary. They have 4 children, Angela, Julie, Sally and Kimberly. He was nominated by Edd Bankowski.
Phyllis McMacken-Maschke (Outstanding Teacher)
Phyllis McMacken-Maschke was a teacher with the Bedford Public Schools from 1962 until her retirement in 1984. She graduated in 1944 from the University of Toledo and did her graduate work at Eastern Michigan University. While at UT she worked for the Sun Oil Company in their labs. When her children were all in school, she began her teaching career at Luella Cummings School in Toledo. In 1962, Phyllis was hired to teach at Bedford High School. She taught many different subjects including: Home Economics, Biology, General Science and Math. She was one of the first women in the State of Michigan to be certified as a driver’s training instructor. She was the cheerleader advisor for many years and could be found at most athletic events. “Mom” as she was called by many of her students, also served as a class advisor for the classes of ’67 & ’73. She was activities director and student council advisor during the 70’s up to her retirement in 1984. Phyllis was always there to help students who were in need and to enhance high school events. Fellow teachers and administrators remember her as a person who went above and beyond her duties as a teacher. Phyllis was married to Jack McMacken, who died in 1999, for 54 years. They had four children who all graduated from Bedford High School: James ’65, Chris ’67, Ellen (Bacon) ’68 and Karen (Adamski) ’73. Phyllis married former Bedford High School teacher, coach and principal, Art Maschke in 2000. He passed away in 2005 and Phyllis passed away in December of 2005 at the age of 84. Phyllis was nominated by her daughters Ellen Bacon and Karen Adamski.
The 1966 team won the first GLL Championship in football. It also was the first championship for Bedford in football since 1958. The Mules went 3-6 in 1965 losing three games by seven points or less before blanking Whitmer 6-0 in the final game of the season. The Whitmer game is the one that Coach Ray Kwiatkowski believes gave the players a winning attitude and the necessary confidence. Coach Kwiatkowski stated that “I believe that our accomplishment began during the final game of the 1965 football season. Bedford had never beaten Whitmer. This Bedford team, which was all about breaking barriers, playing tough, and handling pressure, captured each moment of that last game. Coach Kwiatkowski went on to say “this win gave our team and our school pride, dignity, and a belief in creating our own destiny”. Each and every member of the 1966 team began working toward the 1966 season with REAL expectations, even winning a GLL Championship!
The goal sounds simple, but there were (almost) insurmountable odds. Whitmer was three times the size of Bedford. Rule variations between Ohio and Michigan did not help. Bedford was the only Michigan school in an otherwise Ohio league. Ohio's pre-season practices began three weeks before Michigan's starting date, which included two-a-day practices. Ohio was allowed three scrimmages with opponents while Michigan had only one. Ohio's game schedule began a game before Michigan's. All this gave Ohio considerably more experience when we met on the field. The Bedford players were well aware of the differences and chose to work through them to achieve their goal, GLL CHAMPIONS.
With only 33 players on the varsity, starters, scout and special team players, managers, and coaches each contributed toward the ultimate goal. Jobs overlapped and practices were constant movement for everyone involved in the preparation for the exciting season. To name individuals for leadership, outstanding performances, enthusiasm, and simply hard work would be an impossible task because there were so many equal contributions. A team is capable of accomplishing things that no individual can, regardless of how talented he may be. This is a team award and it is deserved by this team in its entirety.
The following is information listed in the end-of-the-season banquet program:

Dear Fellow Bedford High School Graduates,

We are excited about this new system and hopefully you will be too. It enables us to keep you informed about future Bedford Alumni events and other good things that are happening at your “old” Alma Mater. We have people who live far away inquire all the time about the school, and now we are able to send out updates as the need arises. We hope that you will enjoy hearing from us from time to time. Our vice-president Gene Stock has the responsibility to produce and publish the newsletter. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions concerning the newsletter please contact him by e-mail at the address listed above. We are always looking for positive stories about Bedford Alumni to include in the newsletters; so if you have one, send it in.
Many of you may not be aware that we do have an active alumni association; so a little history is probably in order.
The organization was born in 1996 as a result of the need to build a new football and track venue in Bedford. The voters in the community had made it clear that this venue would not be supported in a bond issue and our old facility was just not capable of hosting the events in this day and age. Our old stadium (as many of you will remember) was located behind our bus garage and not on the high school campus So, a group of Bedford Graduates got together and discussed the possibilities of forming an association. The list of things that the group could help with turned out to be far more than just the stadium. It was decided then to go ahead and form the association and that the first special project would be a privately funded new stadium for Bedford High School. The support of the community was overwhelming; people donated money, labor, materials and helped to raise funds for the project. The decision to name it the Bedford Community Stadium was easy, as the community became so deeply involved in the project. The association borrowed one million dollars to start the project and we now have an outstanding facility that is not only used by the school but is open to the entire community. On any given afternoon you will find area residents walking or running the track, sitting in the stands with a good book on a sunny day, or just stopping by to chat with friends. It has really been an outstanding project and we are very proud to have been a part of it. We continue to raise money to make our annual payment, and our balance is now under $300,000.00.
Information concerning the 9 th Annual Bedford High School Alumni Association Hall of Fame banquet is included in this newsletter. We would like to invite all of you to attend this wonderful event.
