Bedford Township Safe Routes to School:

Welcome to the Safe Routes to School Project for Bedford Township. This page is where you can get information on the planning, organizing and development to make a safe way for our children to walk, run, bike or hike to our community schools and neighborhoods.

Our mission is to enable and encourage children in grades K-8, including those with disabilities, to walk and bicycle to school; To make bicycling and walking to school a safer and more appealing transportation alternative, thereby encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle from an early age;To facilitate the planning, development, and implementation of projects and activities that will improve safety and reduce traffic, fuel consumption and air pollution in the vicinity of elementary schools.

Please get involved in making our community a safer place for everyone to travel throughout Bedford Township Michigan. To get involved with Bedford Township Safe Routes to School Program please contact Michelle Bork

Information from Chairman Michelle Bork:

April 27, 2013:

Right now we need two teams of people:

1) Engineers - 4-5 or more? This is a BIG one, without them, there is no project.

2) Parents, students, and concerned citizens willing to spend 1 morning/afternoon walking 1 mile of roadway taking pictures and jotting down notes on what they experience on their walk. 35 or more people for this would be great!

There is a total of 7 miles of roadway that we think would be a good start for our Safe Routes to School:

Jackman Road from Smith to Temperance, Sterns from Douglas to Lewis, and Dean from Douglas to Lewis. These routes would all lead to JRE, BJHS, and BHS. This would be a GREAT first phase of building safe walkways in our community. We will just need to come up with a date for this "Walking Audit". Mid-late May would be the best timing.

May 16, 2013

Hi everyone,

I have been doing some heavy research about the whole Safe Routes Project. First,  I talked to April who is part of the Safe Routes program.  She told me that we would only be responsible for the survey and walking assessment part and that the road commission would take care of the planning, engineering, and blueprints.

I then talked to Scott at the road commission and I got a completely different story.  He said they do not have any people that they could do any of this and it would have to be completely done by volunteers.  He said the  road commission would only provide the vehicle to flow the money through.  He also said that the next date to put in for this project to be approved would be spring of 2015.
I then walked and took pictures for about 4 of the miles we were considering in the route.  I found a lot of obstacles that would have to be considered.  Ditches, culverts, very low and uneven land next to the roads, and no consistency in any good path to the schools.  This would take an extreme amount of planning to make this feasible for a path.
Last, I talked with someone from the planning commission and they told me that there are not easements for all properties in this area.  This would be a huge issue.

With all of these obstacles that we would have to go through, I don't see it all coming together smoothly.  I would love to have a community that is pedestrian friendly, but asking volunteers to donate hours upon hours of their time and effort to maybe get it done is just too much to ask.  Thank you all for your time, effort, and concern, but I don't think we will spend anymore time on this project for now.

-Michelle

Here is a comment from the leaders of the "Citizens for Fiscal Responsibility" concerning the group's Mission: "Right now the primary focus of the "Citizens for Fiscal Responsibility" is on the schools and stopping their never ending cycle of dependency on taxpayers to maintain the schools.  However, the group has every intention of ensuring that ALL public officials and ALL public ally funded organizations are indeed “fiscally responsible” and good stewards of the taxpayer’s money.  The group WILL weigh in on the fiscal performance of Township government and county agencies.  Citizens for Fiscal Responsibility WILL NOT endorse or support any public officials or tax requests that do not meet basic, common sense standards of legitimate need and fiscal discipline."

Current News Concerning the Citizens For Fiscal Responsibility:

May 21, 2015 Members of CFFR Visit Michigan State Capital

Citizens for Fiscal Responsibility of Lambertville, Michigan spends a day in Lansing
(Article submitted by Mike Jacobs, CFFR Treasurer)

Thursday 5-21-15 twelve members of CFFR traveled to Lansing and arrived at the Capital at 9:30 AM. We were greeted by aids from state representative Jason Sheppard’s staff. The following six hours were intense, enlightening, informative, awesome, and in the words of Senator Dale Zorn humbling. The tour we received of the Capital Building, the Chambers, Rotunda, the actual sessions of the Representatives and Senators on their floors were truly a site to behold. Poetry in motion or in this case the Government in motion, how it’s done.

Most humbling is the history of who and what they have accomplished here from the state’s inception. The sacrifices, dedication, and the lives given from this great state of Michigan to make it what it is today. When you view the actual regiment flags from the civil war wrapped around the rotunda walls it all becomes so real, and truly humbling. CFFR was honored with an introduction to the House of Representatives as we attended a session from the gallery. A moment we all will cherish. The private meetings in the offices of both Representative Jason Sheppard and Senator Dale Zorn were candid, open and beyond informative. A lot of tough questions were asked and sensitive issues discussed and with this the dialog was found to be encouraging.

Several new Senate Bills were explained, Bills 322 & 323 along with a number of options to current practices. It was recognized that much work remains to be done although it is apparent road repair relief is on the horizon. Senator Zorn and Representative Sheppard and their staff are working for us and moving in the right direction. We as a Political Activist Committee have identified areas in which we as a group can help and we are committed to that challenge. It is clear that all Michigan residents can help to fix this problem with our roads. We have in our possession the best and strongest tool. Our Vote!

TAC Information

What Is TAC?
An arm of the EDC (Economic Development Corporation), TAC is an informal group of Temperance-based individuals whose mission statement is to address issues relevant to revitalizing downtown Temperance.  Their efforts focus on maintaining the unique identity of Temperance, as distinct from that of Bedford township as a whole, while striving to effect positive changes that will benefit business owners, residents and visitors alike.

Why Was TAC Formed?
In August of 2003, despite a booming population, Temperance’s village center and our downtown business district, were in a downward spiral.  The EDC concluded that a motivated core group was needed to address these and other concerns.  A public meeting was held seeking interested individuals to help revitalize downtown Temperance; TAC was the result of that meeting.

Who Belongs To TAC?
Anyone with a vested interest in downtown Temperance may attend and participate at TAC meetings – those interested in historical preservation, residents, landowners, business owners, etc.  Positive input and active participation are welcome.

When Do They Meet?
Regularly scheduled meetings are held the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m.  Most meetings are held at the Ivor Lindsay Senior Center.  Meeting times & locations are posted on the Cable station’s community calendar and listed in the Bedford Now and Bedford Press newspapers.

What Have They Accomplished So Far?
